icon #64 | October 2008

You can’t afford to miss icon 064: it’s the redesign issue. Icon has changed from top to bottom, with a new look, a new easy-to-carry size, and tonnes of new content. In the cover feature, we take a close look at the oil crisis and find that plastic might not be the environmental criminal it’s made out to be. As part of our new series of conversations, artist Olafur Eliasson discusses Berlin, the Middle East and the Pantheon with architect Markus Miessen.

Also, we interview Sou Fujimoto, the nonconformist of Japanese architecture, camera-shy fashion designers Bless, and the incredibly busy Max Lamb. For buildings, we visit Bjarke Ingels’ mountainous one-liner outside Copenhagen, and Barkow Leibinger’s gem of a staff canteen.

New work from OMA, Martino Gamper, Jean Nouvel, Feld 72, DSDHA, Muuto and the students at ECAL is up front, and in the back Review takes in two of the summer’s biggest films, MOMA’s summer blockbuster, and books on China and Aldo van Eyck. Plus, there’s new opinion, new illustrated features and even more interviews – as well as the icon design trail, included free. It’s the essential design magazine.

You can buy the redesigned icon at Habitat’s London stores, and Habitat is also hosting the icon design trail hubs during the London Design Festival.

“If you’re a subscriber, then you’re in for a special treat from this issue, you’ll be getting your own limited-edition icon front cover every month. To subscribe, click here.”

Designing with light
Architecture and urban design are more than ever connected with artificial light. Nearly every building nowadays is designed with a special lighting plan and every self-respecting city has a light management department dedicated to the lighting of streets, squares and buildings. The reason is not hard to find: light not only makes the built environment visible and visually attractive, it is an essential ingredient for a safe, liveable and commercially successful environment.

The Shape of Things to Come

Design in the 21st century has liberated itself from industrial conditions and the associated physical demands. With new technology, expanded choice of materials and the practice of luxurious craftsmanship, designers are embracing design with scintillating attitude, challenging aesthetic boundaries and speculating new expressions in visual codes. Desire documents current developments in furniture and object design today, showcasing recent work by the most exciting and influential designers from around the globe categorized into four distinct trends and groups: Modernists, Taletellers, Inventors and Entertainers.

Editors: R. Klanten, S. Ehmann, A. Kupetz, S. Moreno, A. Mollard
Language: English

Release: October 2008 Available Soon!
Price: € 44,00 / $ 69,00 / £ 35,00
Format: 24 x 30 cm
Features: 280 pages, full colour, hardcover
ISBN: 978-3-89955-218-8

Design in the 21st century has liberated itself from industrial conditions and the associated physical demands. The clean and simplified designs of Minimalism, where less is more and form follows function, is widely practiced today but with new vigor and context. There is also an explosion of vibrant design today that breaks free from the minimal style of approach, prevailing in current design trends. With new technology, expanded choice of materials and a return to luxurious craftsmanship, designers are embracing design with scintillating attitude, challenging aesthetic boundaries and speculating new expressions in visual codes.

Desire is an up-to-date comprehensive survey on furniture and object design today showcasing the crème de la crème of designers culled from around worldwide. It presents celebrated designers who represent the Modernists, creating sophisticated designs that are redefining the formal language of Modernism blending the restraint of form with the refined use of materials. They are featured along with the inventors; visionary designers who continue to challenge our perception of design with futuristic shapes, and the experimental, innovative and often unprecedented use of materials.

Furthermore, Desire documents a wave of designers who are practicing a more playful approach to design and producing products that are tale telling. It introduces designers that are merging various design disciplines producing a new expressive language. They show references to historical events and times, follow conceptual and materials processes and are decorative in nature with visually striking shapes and graphic motifs. The book also explores the growing area of design as art, exhibiting recent work by designers who are creating provocative one-off pieces and limited editions. Produced with experimental freedom and intended for a niche market, they are entertaining in nature and exhibited at prestigious design galleries and sold at international auction houses.

With a foreword and chapter introduction texts written by Andrej Kupetz the Managing Director of the German Design Council as well as designer profiles, this indispensable reference provides valuable insight into the current state of furniture design practice. The pioneering examples in Desire will shape the future aesthetic of product, furniture and object design and pave the way we will live in the 21st century.

3deluxe’s multi-disciplinary design approach includes a manifold presentation of outstanding projects, s.a. the multi-media theme world Cyberhelvetia, club and corporate design for Sven Väth’s CocoonClub, events and exhibitions for the FIFA 2006 World Cup and the Leonardo Glass Cube corporate architecture.
With essays by renown authors complementing the descriptions of the projects, sparking a lively debate on current trends in design and architecture, the book is far more than a conventional presentation of works. The sources of inspiration are detached from the projects. Wiesbaden-based 3deluxe compile their specific design approaches under their own terms, e.g. artificial biotopes, corporate metamorphoses and genetic architecture.

3deluxe act somewhere between popular culture and applied arts, between surface and space. The advantages of a multitude of inspirations become obvious, clearly showing in their graphic and product designs for fashion, music and sports, exhibitions, spatial productions (e.g. SCAPE youth and media pavilion at the Expo 2000), trade fair stands (Volkswagen, MTV), themed entertainment or architectural projects. Often deconstructionist in nature their projects disclose a fundamental interest in the acute exploration of new techniques, materials and methods.

This first monograph extensively introduces the designer’s full creative universe from the past, present and future. Celebrated projects such as furniture collections for Quinze & Milan, Moroso and Swarovski, concept cars for Lamborghini, the colossal wooden Uchronia sculpture at the Burning Man Festival and his monumental Cityscape sculpture project in Brussels are featured.

The trailblazing, self-made Belgian designer and artist, Arne Quinze, is a creative phenomenon. Effortlessly crossing over between the most diverse disciplines from art, design and architecture, he has established a new invigorating design language that has taken the design world by storm and has instantly become
an icon.

Quinze’s genius lies in his ability to fuse polar extremes – passion and chaos with controlled elegance. He masterfully creates immaculate, urbane and polished designs that are balanced with a certain contradicting tension, giving them a refined yet exuberant appearance. He realises his ideas with extraordinary verve and is able to apply them to projects of any scale, whether it be architecture, interior design, urban planning, furniture design, car design or footwear.

This publication is the first monograph to document Arne Quinze’s full creative universe from the past, present and future. The book showcases celebrated projects including furniture collections he has created for Quinze & Milan, where he is the creative director, Moroso and concept cars for Lamborghini, colossal wooden Uchronia sculpture at the Burning Man Festival in the Nevada desert, his recent monumental Cityscape sculpture project in Brussels’ Quartier Louise and more.

Over 40 projects are presented with lavish photographs, personal sketches and accompanied by incisive texts giving insight into Quinze’s cosmos. Dazzling but never flamboyant, Quinze is undeniably one of the most ambitious and influential individuals in the creative scene today.

This month, icon hits the road, touring the wildest and remotest parts of Norway to see architects squaring up to a formidable challenge: outstanding natural beauty. We visit the remarkable architectural interventions scattered in a sublime landscape of glaciers, mountains, forests and fjords.

The rest of the features also boldly go to extreme destinations. We visit the future, where Doshi Levien and Dunne & Raby are steering research for microchip giant Intel. We hack through the graduate show jungle to pick out the gems from this year’s student work. And we brave the inhospitable environment of a restaurant in Paris to meet design impresario Didier Krzentowski, owner of Galerie Kreo.

In news, there’s new work from Greg Lynn, Daniel Libeskind, Marije Vogelzang, Work AC and Olafur Eliasson, plus the best of the London Festival of Architecture. In review there’s Buckminster Fuller, My Bloody Valentine and Adolf Hitler.

Editorial

The main character in a novel by W.G. Sebald, architecture professor Jacques Austerlitz, wonders why the history of architecture has left such an extraordinary inventory of buildings and constructions, but completely ignores the sentiments and sensations associated with these built spaces and their “lived” aspects.

Where does this historical dismissal of the idea of architecture, wholly identified with the production of object-buildings, originate?

Can we still trust and rely on a history of architecture that urges us to accumulate objects in museums.

To regain a truly contemporary concept of architecture, we might instead opt for a different choice: to reject untidily the voluntas aedificandi and gain a lateral, more immaterial, mobile perspective of the horizon’s extent. Architecture would be regarded, therefore, as a crossover, an unstable and impermanent discipline, a saprophytic machine capable of incorporating and metabolising at different levels the physical and cultural materials of today’s space, in order then to put them back into the cycle of life reassembled in different sequences.

A saprophyte is an organism that lives on the deconstructive manipulation of existing materials. By retrieving and organically processing decayed matter, saprophytic organisms produce living eco-environmental contexts where none previously existed. By adopting this approach, the Cartesian place of architecture shifts from production and accumulation to the interception and transformation of objects and concepts already present in our environment. And its aim is to find solutions and contexts not yet thought of or tested.

The saprophytic attitude relentlessly dismantles and puts together systems of economic, human and symbolic relations rooted in space. The purpose of this ever-changing task is not to produce finished objects but an uninterrupted flow of materials, suggestions and concretions. These, in turn, are ready to be reused and rescheduled, in an infinite process of appropriation and release.
